Porsche 911 (1969 - 1973)

In 1969 Porsche introduced the B series: with an increased wheelbase (from 2,211 to 2,268 millimetres) for all 911 and 912 models. The overall length of the car did not change. Fuel injection arrived for the 911S as well for a new middle model; the 911E. In 1970 the engines of all 911s were increased to 2195cc and power outputs were upgraded. Production of the 912 was discontinued after the introduction of the Porsche 911T, which was an entry model. Later on the 911E became available, which had a lower power output than the 911S, but had a quicker acceleration.

Model years 1972 and 1973 consisted of the entry level 911T, the midrange 911E and the top of the line 911S. All 3 models were equiped with a new 2341cc engine. In 1972 a tremendous effort was made to improve the handling of the 911. Due to the unusual engine placement, early 911's were prone to oversteer when driven to the limit. In an attempt to remedy this, Porsche relocated the oil tank from its position behind the right rear wheel to in front of it. This improved the weight distribution and thus, handling.

911S models also gained a discreet spoiler under the front bumper to improve high-speed stability. For racing at this time, the 911ST was produced in limited numbers. The cars were available with either a 2466cc or 2492cc engine, producing 270 PS at 8000 rpm. Weight went down to 960 kg. The 911S' had success at the Daytona 6 Hours, the Sebring 12 Hours, the 1000 km Nürburgring and the Targa Florio. The 911E and 911S used mechanical fuel injection. The 911T was carbureted, except in the US where it also used MFI. January 1973, US 911T models switched to a new K-Jetronic Continuous Fuel Injection system from Bosch.
