Mercedes-Benz 280 SL

The Mercedes-Benz 280 SL was introduced in December 1967 and being manufactured until 23 February 1971. Over the years, the W113 evolved from a sportscar into a comfortable grand tourer. US models were usually equipped with the four-speed automatic transmission and air conditioning. Manual transmission models came with the standard four-speed or the optional ZF five-speed. In Europe, manual transmissions without air conditioning were still the most popular. More than half of the 23.885 Mercedes-Benz 280SL's were sold in the US.

The main change from the 250SL to the 280SL was an upgrade to the 2778cc M130 engine with 170PS max power and 180 lb·ft max torque, which finally gave the W113 adequate power. The performance improvement was achieved by increasing bore by 4.5mm, which stretched the limits of the M180 block, and required pairwise cylinder casts without cooling water passages. This mandated an oil-cooler, which was fitted vertically next to the radiator.

Buying a Mercedes-Benz 280SL?

North American models were slightly different from European models, the most obvious one being the distinctive sealed beam bulb headlights (required in the USA). Other differences of the North American models included imperial gauges, chrome bumper guards, lower rear-axle ratios and no single-side parking lights. USA market 280SL engines required emission control modifications, including softer valve timings, a reduced compression ratio and a modified injection pump. Automatic transmission, air conditioning, and white wall tires were much more popular in the US than elsewhere.
