When Volkswagen introduced the Karmann Ghia in 1955, the straightforward engineering of the Beetle finally received the bodywork it deserved. The design came from Italian coachbuilder Ghia, while German coachbuilder Karmann of Osnabrück was responsible for production. The combination resulted in a car that drove like a Volkswagen but looked like an Italian sports car. In 1957, the Cabriolet joined the range, featuring a beautifully shaped, fully retractable soft top that preserved the elegant lines of the coupé. This 1971 Cabriolet is powered by the well-known air-cooled 1600cc four-cylinder boxer engine, coupled to a 4-speed manual transmission: a drivetrain that has more than proven its reliability and gives this open-top Volkswagen a wonderfully relaxed character.
